FREYA ROY DAY IS DONE (FEAT. DEACON)

Freya Roy's unique take on electronic, nu-jazz-inspired hip-hop is seriously impressive. Her new track, 'Day Is Done', places her stylish beats beneath the flow of South London rapper DEACON, whose voice perfectly suits the shuffling, smooth beat that acts as the track's backbone. Groovy horn lines are used as sparingly as her late-on-the-beat keyboard chords, creating an indelible coolness. "The track was pieced together throughout lockdowns, and breaking into dance-like territory, it represents the turning of relationships and navigating life through dark times," she explains. "I chose to name this after hearing jazz-pianist Brad Mehldau’s rendition of ‘Day Is Done’, originally written by Nick Drake. The track is so beautiful and I played it a lot when I was navigating a wrist injury and had to take a break from music." Her new EP, For Who I Have Become, drops on July 13th, 2022. -Dan Peeke.
